What does a Virtual Medical Secretary do? This is the million dollar question I often get asked at networking events or by friends and acquaintances who want to know more about the type of work I do. Sometimes it is difficult to imagine how a medical secretary can work remotely but still provide the full cover and support required in private practice, but luckily it can be done!

Virtual medical secretaries are qualified and/or experienced in medical administration and provide full cover and support that doctors and healthcare professionals need on a remote basis. Every doctor and practice are different and require different levels of support. Some doctors will only require transcription and general administration tasks and some will require full practice management cover from billing and booking appointments to transcription.

The main tasks of a Virtual Medical Secretary are:

  • Email management
  • Phone call management
  • Liaising with private hospitals and GP surgeries
  • Transcription

With every doctor there are variations to this and each practice has different requirements. The main role of the Virtual Medical Secretary is to make sure that the cover you provide ensures that the doctor does not need to worry about the administration processes in their practice. Have a look at my services page to give you an idea of the types of services offered by Virtual Medical Secretary.

This is what you need to think about when you decide you want to start your own virtual medical secretary business – what skills you have and what do you enjoy doing. Will you be able to provide the level of cover the doctor needs? There could be a number of reasons you are considering starting you own business but I would advise that you make sure you are happy in the work that you are doing as this comes across to your clients. You can only provide a high standard service and run a successful business if you have a passion for what you are doing and enjoy it.

Do not take on too much or say you can do things you are not sure of or do not enjoy. Do not jump at the first client that comes along, I get it, you are keen to get started with clients but the first client that comes along is not necessarily going to be the right fit for your business. Always, always, always make sure you are right for each other. I urge that for your happiness and business success that you always keep this in mind!
