I often hear from medical secretaries who are looking for employment with Virtual Medical Secretary, and I also hear from medical secretaries who are interested in starting their own business but they do not know where to start. I love helping those who get in contact to find their way and set up their own Virtual Medical Secretary business.

There could any number of reasons why medical secretaries want to move away from the employment they are currently in, I get that, as that was me.

Reasons for setting up business

I had a number of reasons for starting my own business but the number one reason was becoming a mother. After returning to work as a medical secretary after my first child I really struggled. I had to work as I had bills to pay but it just did not feel right for me anymore, put that together with unsupportive colleagues and I really was miserable. It was then I started the lengthy process of planning to launch my own business (it was very long as I had a toddler and a young baby). I started with a virtual assistant course, which helped me, but it was not focused on the medical field. When I fell pregnant with my second I knew that I did not want to go back to my workplace. I started the process of setting up my business while on maternity leave.

In the beginning

I thought of my business name, set up my website, business email and social media pages when on maternity. This meant I did not have any childcare cost as I did not need childcare when doing all of the groundwork. I could do this round the kid’s naps/bedtimes or family helped look after them and it meant I could enjoy quality time with my children on maternity leave. Due to some health issues I could not return to work straight away but I started to look for clients. I then had some potential clients in the pipeline but then the pandemic came!

It was then I was approached by a company that required my skills to help train a team to medical secretaries. This led to me training a team in medical terminology and medical secretary processes. This experience was really enjoyable and it sparked a passion for training and I realised I really enjoyed the training and teaching side of things. Following this I was then approached by my first client which then led on to more clients!

I learned a few things about myself along the way, like not to jump at the first opportunities that come your way and to make sure that the client is a good fit for you! The beauty of running my own business like this has meant I can be there for my children more. It also means that my childcare costs have not been as high as they would have been in a 9-5 office job. It has meant that I can choose my hours and I can be there for the school runs which is so important to me.
